Whilst it is well-known that many men will commonly suffer some form of thinning hair in their life, and whilst baldness in men has almost become fashionable, it is also possible to have hair loss in young women. For young women women hair loss can be emotionally devastating, in fact thinning hair can be devastating for women of any age. Lets examine the causes of hair loss in young women.

There are a number of causes of both sudden and slow hair loss. Young women are less likely to suffer from hair loss than older women however it is not unheard of to find cases of hair loss in a young woman. There are a range of possible causes of thinning hair in young women.

There is a range of underlying medical conditions, symptoms of which can be some degree of loss of hair both in young women and older women. If your worrying balding is sudden or patchy then you are well advised to visit the doctor for an opinion about whether this is a symptom of an underlying medical condition that needs treatment. For example there is a condition called polycystic ovary syndrome which can result in some thinning of the hair or even the growth of extra hair on the face or body. Polycystic ovary syndrome is a condition where women produce more of the hormone testosterone than is normal. The cause is unknown.

Other medical conditions can also produce symptoms of hair loss. Young women can suffer from thyroid problems which can affect them in this way and there are also other medical conditions for which hair loss is a symptom. Normally where the underlying condition is treated you should experience normal growth.

Childbirth at any age can also cause thinning hair. Again normal growth should resume.

Young women are also very aware of their weight and try all sorts of diets to try and reduce weight. It is well-known that hair is heavily dependent for good health on an adequate supply of vitamins and minerals and that a poor intake of essential nutrients can result in thinning. For example, although it is not common, a deficiency of vitamin B (biotin) is known to cause some baldness.

Where young women are actively dieting in a way that leads to vitamin deficiency this can also create some balding.

However there is one cause of balding in women that is far more prevalent than all others combined. Although it is less well-known women, like men, can suffer from pattern baldness. This is an inherited genetic condition that predisposes the sufferer to thinning of the hair. Whilst it is unlikely that female pattern baldness can lead to baldness in young women as it does in men it can result in sufficient thinning to be embarrassing. More so than men women are emotionally traumatised by any degree of hair loss. Young women even more so.

Hair thinning in young women is not common and most of the causes can be reversed to restore normal growth. This is not the case with female pattern baldness but the good news is that there is one excellent product which is FDA approved to treat thinning hair in women. Whilst there is only one approved product it has been shown to be effective as a balding treatment for women in most cases, but not all.

However in any case of advancing balding, either of men or women, it is important to undertake any form of treatment as early as possible. The quicker you undertake the treatment the better result you can expect.

The FDA approved product approved for hair loss in young women is minoxidil. Minoxidil on its own has been shown to be effective, however one company has now combined the use of minoxidil with a range of essential hair nutrients that greatly increases the likelihood of hair regrowth.

It is quite common in men to experience hair loss. Young women and older women however are not immune and if you're one of those who are experiencing some form of balding you need to consider your options as soon as possible. There is one FDA approved balding treatment for women that you should try, provided you have eliminated the possibility of a medical problem.
