Women and hair loss aren't two things that people usually associate with each other. In fact, most people don't take it very seriously. But hair loss can be a devastating experience for a woman, and it can seriously impact her self-esteem. Why don't the people around her understand how she feels?

Hair Loss Is Considered A Man's Problem

People aren't really too surprised when a man starts losing his hair. While there are a lot of emotional issues for men who are going bald, men tend to get a lot more support from family members, friends, and society as a whole. In fact, it's fashionable right now for men who are losing their hair, and even for those who aren't, to shave their heads completely. This is acceptable, and even considered sexy by many women.

It's a little different for women who are facing hair loss.

Women Don't Really Go Bald, Do They?

Women tend to lose their hair a little differently than men do. What happens is that when a woman's hair regrows as part of the normal hair lifecycle, it may grow back thinner than it was to start with. Over time, a woman's hair can become thinner and sparser. The hair may be shorter, leading to a "peach fuzz" appearance. Very few women will develop bald spots like men do.

But because thinning hair in women is a lot less obvious than a bald spot, this causes people to not take women's concerns about this subject seriously. Many women are too embarrassed to bring up the subject of hair loss with their doctors. And sometimes doctors have the attitude that this isn't a serious problem, and a woman should just "live with it."

When the people around her fail to realize how devastating hair loss is for a woman, it can lead to decreased self-esteem for her, and even anxiety and depression.

Only Old Women Lose Their Hair, Right?

Nothing could be further from the truth. Although most hair loss in women is associated with menopause, may women start losing their hair in their late teens and twenties. Hair loss in younger women is not common, but it's not that unusual, either.

Any woman who is losing her hair should have a check-up with her doctor to rule out any medical problems. Cystic ovaries, hypothyroidism, autoimmune disease, psychological or physical stress, and dietary deficiencies can all contribute to hair loss in women. Chemotherapy and certain prescription drugs, including birth control pills, beta-blockers, coumadin, anti-depressants and others can cause a woman to lose her hair too. It may be necessary to change medications or adjust the dosages.

Take Your Hair Loss Seriously

Even though some people don't consider hair loss in women a problem, it's a very real issue for many women. And it should always be taken seriously by the people in her life.
