More often than not, a diseased thyroid and hair loss go hand in hand. In fact, a lot of times problems with the thyroid are discovered due to the patient's concern about losing hair. There have been patients who have actually credited their hair dressers with helping them discover their thyroid problems by noticing extreme hair loss. While it is normal to lose a small amount of hair every day, a diseased thyroid causes hair to fall out in excessive amounts. The hair loss is caused by the hormonal imbalance that comes from the improperly functioning thyroid. The hair follicles shut down in order for the body to address the perceived threat from the hormones, and the hair falls out.

Although there are other side effects from thyroid disease, such as severe weight fluctuation, fatigue, trouble concentrating and trouble sleeping, for many the hair loss is the most disconcerting. The good news is that treatments are available for the hair loss. The priority is to correct the problem with the thyroid. Blood tests can determine if the thyroid is producing too many or too few hormones, and medication can be prescribed to help bring the hormones into balance.

Patients who make changes to their diets can also see improvements in hair quality which help lessen the effects of the hair loss. A diet rich in protein and iron can help the appearance of hair, while adding healthy sources of Omega 3 can help strengthen hair.

Other patients choose to handle the hair loss associated with thyroid disease by changing their hair style. For men, a short cut can lessen the effects and make it seem as if it is a deliberate choice. For women, a shorter or layered cut can help give hair more body, and subtle highlights can make hair look fuller and richer.

Many patients experiencing hair loss are comforted to know that it is not permanent. When the thyroid returns to proper functioning, the hair follicles stop releasing hair. New hair grows in, and over time, the patient finds their hair restored. It does not happen over night, but it does happen.

While thyroid disease and hair loss can affect anyone, there are certain factors which make some individuals more susceptible than others. Women are more likely than men to have thyroid problems, especially women who have undergone dramatic hormonal changes such as those associated with pregnancy or menopause. Individuals who consume a large amount of soy in their diet are at an increased risk, as are individuals who are under an extreme amount of stress.

Thyroid disease is not something that should be taken lightly. Anyone who is experiencing symptoms should be seen by a doctor. The most common symptoms are hair loss; rapid, unexplained weight gain or loss; fatigue; constipation; and, for women, irregular menstrual cycles. Thyroid issues are treatable, but if left untreated can get worse and cause other problems. It is more than just handfuls of hair in the shower. It is an improperly functioning thyroid and needs to be treated.

Have you ever imagined what will happen if your hair growth rate differs from the others? Usually, hairs grow about ½ inch per month but other people's hair grows faster or the other way around, slower. The season also affects hair growth like during summer; it tends to grow faster compared during cold seasons. Other factors also affect growing hair quickly, like the shampoo and conditioner that you use, how you work on it, combing etc. and of course the overall condition of your hair. If you are concerned about growing your it quickly then try these tips.

• To promote circulation of the blood, which carries important nutrients your hair strands need, try massaging your scalp occasionally each day. You can do this while watching TV or in bed. When each strand is properly nourished, growing it quickly is easy.

• If you have a hair that is brittle and breaks easily, try cutting off what they call dead ends or more often called split ends. The damage can go as far as the shaft and this can stop your hair from growing faster. It is also important to take extra careful when combing. When it is wet, it is vulnerable to breakage during this time. Use a wide-toothed comb to detangle the hair. Rub on a deep conditioner at least once a month to hydrate the follicles and protect them from damage.

• Go on a healthy diet. A healthy body also affects growing hair faster. You have to nourish your body properly in order to get the best nutrients that help hairs grow fast. Level-up your protein intake such as found in soya.

• Rather than every day, use a shampoo every other day. Because you remove the natural and essential oil your hairs produce during shampoo. You do not want to remove this important essence too often. Try using those shampoo recommended by the experts. Ask your friends which brand is the best and works for them.

• If you can stay away from chemical treatments then do. Bleaching, perming, coloring and chemically straightening hair are all abusive. These treatments damage and dry the hair and can slow down the growth. Talk to a salon professional on ways to repair your damaged hair.

• Take supplements like those rich in B vitamins. This can help growing hair quickly. Folic acid is also good but not too much because it can damage your health.

Despite this, there are natural ways that can help making hair grow faster. Here are the things that you will never want to miss.

Some stylist would suggest getting your hair trimmed every 2 months or so however, if your hair grows few centimeters each week, getting a trim this often will defeat the purpose of growing your hair.

2. Change your shampoo and conditioner. You need to use strengthening shampoo as well as conditioner to get that long and strong hair. You need to use those shampoo and conditioner that most salons use. These products have better formula that will help your hair become stronger while you are waiting for it to grow longer.

3. Massage your hair. You can do this at least 5 minutes every day. This way, your blood flow will be better and your scalp will be relaxed, which will help stimulate hair growth. This is also a good and natural way of getting that strong and long hair. You can do this while taking a shower.

4. Folic acid will help making hair grow faster. Because of this, it is advisable that you take a supplement for folic hair every day. It is safe, natural and made from trusted ingredients. In just a few weeks, you will see the difference that it will bring to your hair.

5. Keep a balanced diet. A healthy body makes it possible to grow hair stronger, fuller, shinier and faster. Make sure your diet includes food rich in zinc, calcium, iron and vitamin B12. It is also better if you will eat fresh eggs and fish, basil nuts, cheese and other nutritious food. Not only will you get a stronger hair but also a stronger body and immune system.

Making hair grow faster is easier especially now that people have different options to consider. However, wouldn't it be better to do it naturally? You can avoid the risks that different chemicals can bring you. Additionally, you have greater chance of getting stronger hair that will never break easily.

Baldness is one of the most common problems encountered by men especially as they start to age. Alopecia is the medical term for baldness; this is characterized by gradual thinning of the hairline which may develop during puberty and worsens as you mature. There are a lot of reasons that contribute to the loss of hair; some may develop due to genetic factors, some as a result of chemotherapeutic medication, while some could be a sign of an underlying hormonal problem.

According to hair experts and health professionals, DHT or dihydrotestosterone is the main culprit for having alopecia. When DHT is increased, follicular production is decreased. Hence, the growth of new hair is inhibited. For this reason, it is believed that lowering the level of DHT would promote re-growth of hair follicles. There are many drugs that are used to treat alopecia; however some may still opt the traditional way of correcting the problem because of its cost-efficiency. Below are the top five herbs which are used as alternative treatment against hair loss:

1. Saw Palmetto extract

The use of Saw Palmetto has been found to lower dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which is a precursor to the gradual reduction of hair follicles. Saw Palmetto has an anti-androgenic property which lowers the level of DHT hence inhibiting hair loss.

2. Nettle Root Extract

In Europe, this is popularly known as alternative medicine in treating Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia. Research shows that there is a link between hair loss and prostate problem. Moreover, Nettle root is a very good source of retinol and ascorbic acid. These two minerals are important lipids that stimulate follicular production and hair re-growth.

3. Aloe Vera

Indians and Native Americans have long been using aloe vera as treatment for their hair. By massaging aloe vera extract combined with coconut milk into the scalp, it cleanses the pores and nourishes the hair shaft. Because of this proven effect, many shampoo manufacturers are using aloe vera for the production of a hair loss treatment.

4. Henna

This is a native Indian herb which is used as hair conditioner. Henna strengthens and repairs damaged hair while it seals the cuticle to prevent hair fall. It also promotes production of natural scalp oil which protects hair from split-ends and loss of shine.

5. Essential oils

Using essential oils for routine scalp massage is effective for preventing hair loss and promoting healthy hair. The combination of lavender extract, sesame oil and almond oil nourish the scalp and enhances follicular production.

Alopecia secondary to the long-term use of chemotherapeutic medication can be permanent in some people. Others may have hair re-growth a few months after chemotherapy but the new hair may have different texture, consistency and color. This condition is called lanugo. It is manifested by the growth of hair like that of a newborn and it rarely grows long. Using alternative medication for this kind of hair loss may never be that effective. However, using the above-mentioned herbs does not produce major adverse effects.

Many African American women are at risk for developing hair loss as a result of their popular hair styling techniques. Traction Alopecia is a hair loss condition caused by damage to the dermal papilla and hair follicle by constant pulling or tension over a long period. It often occurs primarily in persons who wear tight braids, especially "cornrows", that lead to high tension, pulling and breakage of hair. This condition is most prevalent in African American women who commonly wear tight braids when cornrowing and weaving their hair. It can also occur with the wearing of dreadlocks, tight ponytails, and single extensions. Traction Alopecia occurs most commonly in children, teenagers, and young adults. It is seen less often in the older individual.

Traction Alopecia can also be caused by overprocessing the hair - also a common practice in African American females.. This would include chemical straighteners, dyes, and bleaches which damage the keratin structure of the hair. As a result, the hair becomes very fragile and falls out with routine combing and brushing. These processes of straightening and braiding of the hair put the African American female at a great risk for developing hair loss from traction alopecia.

Often overlooked, is the negative impact traction alopecia can have on women. This includes:

inability to style the hairdissatisfaction with appearance and body imagelow self-esteemloss of personal attractiveness and fear of not looking attractive to othersembarrassment, loss of confidence, shynesssocial teasing and humiliationfeeling of depression and introversionwork-related problemsnegative effect on social life

Traction alopecia can be reversed if detected and treated early. However, if the condition is protracted, the condition is often irreversible. Hair styles and procedures that put undue stress and tension on the hair must be replaced for more "gentler" and looser styles. Stylists who service African American women have an obligation to inform their customers of the potential risk of significant hair loss inherent with certain hairstyles.

Unfortunately, there is no medical treatment available to reverse late-stage traction alopecia. Hair transplantation is the only practical solution to date once severe and extensive hair loss has taken place. Hair transplantation is a surgical technique that involves moving individual hair follicles from one part of the body to bald or balding parts. The procedure, however, is very expensive and may be unaffordable for most women.

African American women who feel they may be suffering from the early stages of traction alopecia must see a licensed dermatologist to prevent further hair loss. Hormonal and nutritional treatments may be beneficial. Counseling may also be indicated if the negative effects of the hair loss are severe.
